West Somerset Railway

The West Somerset Railway is a true country branch line of the old Great Western Railway. It’s full of fascination whether you are looking for a nostalgic ride back in time through lovely countryside, or to study the railway and industrial heritage which the line preserves.

The Problem

The railway operates ten stations, gift shops and cafes, and were using multiple suppliers with an array of contracts ending on different dates. The management of this was very complex and time-consuming. During the pandemic, they also received a large trading revenue shortfall due to the truncated operating season with fewer trains running and a reduced capacity resulting from Covid-19 restrictions.

£12,800 - Energy bill saving | £3,968 - Water bill saving

Solution and Outcome

Over the last 3 years, the Beyond Procurement team have been working with West Somerset Railway, to ensure their overhead costs are kept as low as possible. In 2019 Beyond Procurement’s team and buying group reduced their energy bill by a massive £12,800. This contract has also safeguarded the railway from the increases businesses have seen over the last 12 months.

Along with energy, Beyond Procurement also managed to save £2,150 on their water contract. The water contract was subsequently renewed, offering a further £1,818.05 saving. Being an environmental procurement company, the water contract is delivered carbon neutral, saving 5.15 tonnes of carbon per year.
