The Problem

Dedicated to addressing the pressing issue of the climate emergency, WeAreWaterloo BID has implemented its own Climate Action Plan (CAP), with a resolute focus on integrating climate concerns into all of its endeavours. This strategic plan sets ambitious targets, with a net-zero neighbourhood goal by 2030 and a mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2023.

The urgency of the climate emergency looms as one of the paramount challenges, affecting both local and global levels. As we navigate the post-COVID-19 landscape, we must adopt a “new normal” that places confronting the climate emergency at the core of our actions.

The Climate Action Plan (CAP) amalgamates WeAreWaterloo BID’s ongoing initiatives and solidifies its commitment, providing a structured framework for the organisation, supported by its business-led Climate Action Group, to contribute to the realisation of a Net Zero Neighbourhood by 2030, in alignment with the Mayor of London’s environmental targets.

In May 2022, WeAreWaterloo developed a Placemaking Strategy for the region, emphasising the importance and direction of WeAreWaterloo’s sustainability agenda. This Climate Action Plan builds upon these themes while maintaining close alignment with the priorities of partner organisations, including the Greater London Authority (GLA), the London Boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark, Transport for London (TfL), and South Bank and Waterloo Neighbours (SoWN).

WeAreWaterloo BID has made notable commitments:

“We will do all we can to empower our members’ journey to net zero by providing new, free, and subsidised services whilst improving the air quality and climate resilience of the public realm.”

“WeAreWaterloo’s operations will achieve zero carbon emissions from Scope 1 and Scope 2 sources (direct emissions under WeAreWaterloo’s control) by 2023, and Scope 3 sources (indirect emissions through services procured by WeAreWaterloo) by 2028.”

Solution and Outcome

In January 2023, WeAreWaterloo joined forces with Beyond Procurement Ltd to evaluate their own carbon emissions and provide customised support for five BID members. This service is fully funded by WeAreWaterloo BID, granting easy access to expert guidance and assistance.

Beyond Procurement has developed the ZeroTM program, a 12-month initiative to measure, analyse, and reduce emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and the following Scope 3 categories:

• Category 5 - Waste generated in operations

• Category 6 - Business travel

• Category 7 - Work from home data

WeAreWaterloo has set 2023 as its carbon-neutral target. With the assistance of Beyond Procurement, this target is now attainable, and pending approval of their Carbon Reduction Plan, WeAreWaterloo will achieve carbon neutrality within the designated year.

Furthermore, five SME BID members are currently participating in Beyond Procurement’s ZeroTM program, and one company is undergoing Beyond ZeroTM. Beyond Zero is an in-depth program that assesses all upstream and downstream emissions, and supply chains, including all 15 Scope 3 categories, facilitating comprehensive analysis and affording the capacity for Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) and establishing genuine Net Zero objectives.

The support offered through WeAreWaterloo BID represents a community-driven response to emissions reduction, while simultaneously presenting opportunities for substantial value and cost savings.
